The Happier The Hotelier, The Happier the Guest

Mar 2
Remember the days when hotel art conjured up beige landscapes and mushy abstract crap? Those days have gone the way of all things flesh. Hotel art has given way to art hotels like Berlin’s Kuenstlerheim Luise. A mouthful and an eyeful, each of the hotel’s fifty rooms is designed by an artist, and usually a damn good one too. Upon entering the lobby, guests are greeted by a huge protruding equine probiscus by Hans von Meeuwen and the aesthetic anschluss only intensifies in the rooms. In one room the walls are covered in quotes and inspired by Last Tango In Paris (hopefully sans a naked Brando on the floor). In another room, Nathalie Daoust recreates 1920’s Berlin and in yet another, Andreas Paeslack recreates the hovel of a poor poet. No bastion of elitist art they (unlike the Neue Galerie) the rooms range from 48 euro (shower and bathroom in hallway) to 150 (Double room with shower and bathroom).
